![]() | This is the BIRTLEY ARTWORK that was officially named as 'The Wheel of Time' on FRIDAY 21st NOVEMBER 2008, and it is situated at the junction of Durham Road and Birtley Lane. The name 'The Wheel of Time', was chosen from several suggested by our local school children in a competition held by Birtley Community Partnership. The winning entry came from a pupil at Ravensworth Terrace School. "The Wheel of Time" Fiona Gray 2008 What does it Represent? The metal ring represents the community in Birtley with the text showing both the new and old areas that make up the town. This was inspired by images of artillery shell casings, the ends of which have text stamped into them. This links directly with the armaments factory based in the town. The metal ring also represents other industries such as the iron works and the tin plate factory that made milk churns, bread bins etc. There used to be seven brick companies in the town, now only one remains. The mixture of aged and new bricks used, represents the history of Birtley and the present day, while the shape of the pillars gives reference to the industrial heritage of the town. |
