Volunteering

The HUB could not function if it were not for the invaluable support and commitment of our Team of Volunteers. Volunteers, the Friends of the HUB, carry out a number of tasks from staffing the community café area and helping people on the computers to answering queries from members of the public.

Many of the questions are about what is happening to the redevelopment of the centre of Birtley and other parts of the Town. We are often given copies of redevelopment proposals and can show people what is planned.

For more complicated and specialist queries we always signpost people to other specialist organisations and agencies. We have a directory of information at hand for volunteers to refer to, and there is also the twice-a-week Citizens' Advice Bureau (CAB) service, which people can access.

In the future we also hope to work with the CAB to develop new training opportunities for volunteers in advice work, which will help to underpin the twice-a-week sessions.

Developing training opportunities for volunteers is really important, as many people do voluntary work in order to build up a bank of experience so that they can change jobs or improve their chances of getting back into paid employment. We very much wish to support people who want to do this.

There are a huge number of volunteering opportunities available for people to do, and we help people to find the one most suitable for them. We are also in the process of putting together a list of voluntary work opportunities in Birtley.

Whether you are interested in joining our Team of Volunteers at the HUB, looking for other types of voluntary work in the Town, or interested in opportunities elsewhere (even internationally!), please get in touch with us at the HUB, so that we can find something that is suitable for you.
